Batman: The Animated Series by Tom Whalen

Bottleneck Gallery goes back to Batman: The Animated Series today with Tom Whalen taking on two standout Season 1 episodes, and both pieces feel built around the particular weirdness of those stories rather than just their title characters. For S1:E12, Appointment in Crime Alley, Whalen sets Batman in the foreground with flowers in hand while Roland Daggett grins overhead and a large clock face looms behind him, the whole scene wrapped in orange blast clouds, skewed Gotham buildings, and the sleek silhouette of the batmobile. S1:E10, Nothing to Fear, shifts hard into a sickly green-and-purple nightmare, with the Scarecrow stretched across the composition, Batman swinging through smoke, and Thomas Wayne’s frightened face and spiders worked into the edges like fragments of a hallucination. Whalen’s flat shapes, sharp lines, and period-perfect palette fit this series especially well. Regular and variant editions will be available for both prints, with screen prints and acrylic panels offered for each through Bottleneck today at 12PM ET.
