A blue pickup in an open, sun-bleached field. Oliver Barrett’s new Boyhood poster for Mutant keeps things simple and that restraint fits Richard Linklater’s film better than any busier collage ever could. Barrett leaves an enormous amount of negative space above them, letting the hand-drawn title float where the clouds thin out, and the whole image carries the same quiet, in-between feeling that made the film land so hard in the first place. That also makes this a smart piece for Boyhood’s 12th anniversary, since the movie’s defining achievement was never a single dramatic moment but the accumulation of time itself, shot gradually over 12 years so you watch Mason, his family, and their world change in ways no conventional production could fake. Rather than trying to summarize all of that with a stack of scenes, Barrett narrows in on one roadside memory and lets the years around it do the work. Mutant releases the print today at 12PM ET, and for a film built on watching life pass almost imperceptibly, this one feels appropriately patient.
