The Lord of the Rings by Riccardo Federici

As we approach the end of the year, Mondo is dropping an absolutely massive release: Riccardo Federici’s full Lord of the Rings trilogy, captured in his signature hyper-detailed style. Federici is one of those artists whose work feels heavier, every plate of armor, every weathered cloak, every claw and tooth feels sculpted rather than painted and the work looks incredible. His works span comics, fantasy illustration, and his LOTR pieces have been eagerly awaited since the moment Mondo teased them a week ago. This drop represents some of the most dynamic, visceral Middle-earth artwork produced for the poster world in recent memory.

If we look at these a bit closer we can see Federici approaches these scenes like battlefield frescoes. The motion, anatomy, the density of detail, there’s a level of draftsmanship here that makes every piece feel mythological, as if they were pulled from the Red Book itself. The three centerpiece battles from, Fellowship, Two Towers and Return of the King, are meticulously crafted with enormous energy, and the variants showcase his raw pencil work in all its intensity.

In the Fellowship piece, the moment between Sauron and the men of the Last Alliance hits like a hammer, massive, cinematic, and drenched in firelight. The pencil showcase, revealing every contour of armor, flame, and stone.

The Two Towers piece is equally impressive. Treebeard unleashes hell at Isengard as Saruman’s forces scatter. This might be one of the most energetic Ent depictions: gnarled, towering, practically shaking the page.

In the Return of the King artwork, the Witch-king’s fellbeast dominates the frame while Éowyn stands her ground in one of Tolkien’s most legendary confrontations. The pencil edition strips the moment down to pure artistry. Federici’s linework is almost architectural.

Regular editions (full color) will be available individually, while both regular and variant editions will be sold as complete trilogy sets. These are on sale starting Wednesday, December 10th at 12PM ET on the Mondo website.
