Tenebre by Francesco Francavilla

Mutant is releasing a new alternative movie poster for Tenebre, illustrated by Francesco Francavilla. Dario Argento’s Tenebre, released in 1982, stands out even among the director’s other Giallo classics. Known for its sharp aesthetic and excessive violence, the film merges psychological horror with slasher elements, centering around an American mystery writer who becomes entangled in a string of murders while visiting Rome. Notably, Tenebre marked Argento’s return to the giallo genre after working in the supernatural space with Suspiria and Inferno. It’s often highlighted for its stylized cinematography—particularly the famous crane shot—and its pulsating electronic score by Goblin.

Francavilla’s artwork leans into the film’s feverish intensity. Featuring a stark red palette, a blood-soaked eye, and the shadowy presence of the killer looming over a victim, the piece captures the film’s themes of voyeurism and brutality. The knife stretching across the bottom ties together the film’s violence and Argento’s fixation on sharp, deliberate murder imagery. The print drops Wednesday, May 8th at 1PM ET and will be available through Mutant’s shop.
