Onibaba and Kuroneko (aka Black Cat) are two Japanese horror films that were released in the 1960’s and written and directed by Kaneto Shindô. A very well known Japanese director with almost 50 director credits to his name, he also wrote the scripts for hundreds of films during his 100 year long life. Onibaba and Kuroneko are two of his more well known films whose storylines both revolve around women, Samurai and murder. Both films went on to have international success and won multiple awards. Onibaba is one of only 3 films where Shindo-san is credited as art director, in addition to directing. Watching it really gives you a sense of his art style and the themes he liked to use in his work.
Both films lend themselves well to creating exquisite artwork inspired by Feudal Japan, and Takato Yamamoto does not disappoint in crafting incredible pieces. Both prints have endless, interesting little details to comb over. Yamamoto-san is also a master of his craft. Over the years he has lent his skills to numerous works and has done many exhibitions and shows. These new pieces by him are exquisite and we hope to snag one next week. All of the prints are 24″ x 36″ and numbered. The regular versions are of edition size of 120, while the variant, Japanese versions are half of that size with 60 prints each. All of the prints will be available on Tuesday 11th May 2021 at Noon EST on the Dark City Gallery website.
