What makes Ian Permana’s take on The Iron Giant land a little differently for fans of the film is how little of the Giant he actually needs to show to get there: rather than a full heroic figure, he gives us the enormous fallen head half-buried in a junkyard, its glowing eyes still alive, while Hogarth stands tiny in front of it with one hand raised in that first moment of trust.
