Our runner up poster of the year for 2024, The Twilight Zone by @elvisdeadposters. No stranger to creating #alternativemovieposters, ElvisDead has been producing horror inspired artwork and #amps for a number of years. We were first introduced to him in 2020 when we picked up one of our first Mondo posters – Frankenstein. Even back then we were impressed with the highly detailed and his textured style with intricate linework and shading. The technique he uses is reminiscent of etching or scratchboard art and looks great in a finished piece.

As he has created more alternative movie posters there has been an increase in popularity of his work as noted by the comments posted in various commission groups. And for good reason, the artwork is phenomenal. It’s hard not to be impressed by the complexity and level of detail in this piece. The fact that so many different elements from the classic TV show are included is just mind boggling. Elvisdead said there are over 80 references to various actors and episodes from the series. Truly a love letter to the show. And no variants here, just some gorgeous artwork, the way it was intended.

Back from a little hiatus for the holidays and during the break we watched the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A late 80’s “PG” film from Steven Spielberg that we were huge fans of growing up. We can even recall the photo spot at the Disney MGM Studios back lot that had a steamroller you could get crushed under that was from the final scene from the film. Had some good times there.

As for alternative movie posters, there are not a ton for this film. Recently there was a private commission with artwork by @bembiann_art who blew our doors off with the AMP she has created for the film. It dropped in two versions, a color one and the one pictured here, a black and white “Noir” version. Both are exceptional, but we really like the spot gloss enamel varnish that was applied to Jessica Rabbit’s dress that gives this version an extra pop. The composition is outstanding in this piece and the choice to incorporate the Ink and Paint Club into the artwork is a good one. As usual with Bembi’s artwork, the piece is very detailed and the likenesses are impeccable. The typography is also very well done and it is just a fantastic print all around.

Was flattening some prints and when I got to this one, The Grand Budapest Hotel by @rorykurtz, I was struck by how impressive the art is and had to stop and pull it out for this post. Kurtzs’ work is always so clean and polished with lovely shading, it’s hard not to admire it. These were dropped in conjunction with a film screening by @codacurates. There were two additional versions, a fancy gold foil edition and a screening edition. What a beauty.

We were shuffling away Ansin’s recent Empire Strikes Back poster that he did with Bottleneck Gallery when we saw this print that we have not laid eyes on in some time. Love the simplicity of this print. A single scene from A New Hope, superbly illustrated. Ansin said when he drew this image, “I wanted to see how the cantina scene would look if it had been illustrated for an old book, if Star Wars was a traditional epic adventure sharing space with King Arthur and Beowulf. Who knows, maybe sometime in the future it will.” In our opinion he nailed that aesthetic. Finely printed by the folks at DL Screenprinting, the variant includes metallic inks.

Mesmerizing artwork from the Studio Ghibli film, Princess Mononoke by Ise Ananphada. It’s astonishing how much of the film can be found incorporated into a single piece, but Ananphada manages to pull it off. Most of her work is jam-packed with imagery from the source and that is the case here too. Really impressive. This is the Spoke Art Society variant that features Glow in the Dark inks that look great. Happy Friday the 13th. Spellbinding artwork from The Bride of Frankenstein by Anthony Petrie. A companion piece to Petrie’s phenomenal Frankenstein artwork that was released back in 2020. Superb artwork for Sicario by Jake Kontou. Not sure why, but it seems there are only two #altetnativemovieposters for this #dennisvilleneuve film. Kontou’s take is exceptional with spot on likenesses and great concept, executed flawlessly.

Kontou stated that when creating the piece he explored the concept of character morals, with the left side representing those who preserved their morals and those on the right who have lost theirs. The characters down the center are changed during the film and therefore straddle this boundary. Always enjoy hearing what inspired the artist and why the art looks the way it does. I wish more artists would get into their inspiration when creating pieces as it is fascinating to hear.

Love the map in the background and silhouetted soldiers that highlight the broader border conflict that is a key element of the film. This print is actually a giclée that is a printers proof. These were released via Kontou’s mystery tubes drops a few months ago. When producing new prints, he often gets giclée printers, proofs produced for review, and this came from that batch. Very fortunate to have received one as it’s a gorgeous print.

Another superb piece of art from Ken Taylor this one from George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. When I unpacked these prints the first thing that hit me was the striking red color used in the screen prints. Then as you spend more time looking at it, the immense amount of detail becomes clear and it is impressive. Love all the different zombies so finely articulated, with varying expressions. Full title and credits on this one making it a stunning print. Taylor has some new artwork dropping with @postersandtoys later today as well. If you are into Dirty Heads, be sure to check that out. As the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice draws near it got me thinking about this print from Jonathan Wayshak that was released last year with Mondo. Brilliant artwork with some insane line work, the details are mesmerizing. Snake form Betelgeuse looks great and we are diggin’ the inclusion of Adam and Barbara in their monster forms. Even Lydia makes an appearance, snapping away with her camera. Such an awesome print.

Exquisite artwork from the Stanley Kubrick film the shining by Wolfgang LeBlanc. Based on the Stephen King book, the film is a psychological horror/drama masterpiece that still stands up fantastically today. LeBlanc does an excellent job capturing some of the main scenes and themes from the film and the character likenesses are spot on. This is only the second Shining piece we have in the archives, but it’s definitely our favorite.

Superb artwork for Hitchcock’s Rear Window by Paul Mann. Absolutely love the retro look on this one. Man is done a fantastic job with the composition and likenesses, while Juan Saniose’s contributions (text, seps and design elements) to the variant are spectacular. This is one of our favorite Paul Man Alfred Hitchcock pieces. Nice little details in it as well, like the Hitchcock silhouette hiding in the background behind James Stewart’s ear. Awesome work from Valentine for a grossly underrepresented film in the #AMP community, The Mask of Zorro. The artwork is both dramatic and dynamic. Bright, fiery colors contrast nicely with Zorro and the overall image has nice balance. It has a somewhat of a vintage look to it and we love the little details like the 25 anniversary icon. Nice job with the title work as well. Fantastic work, of which prints are still available on the Cellar Door Gallery website.

Happy 4th of July to those that celebrate. You can’t have Independence Day without Jaws can you? Such a fantastic print from Dunn. Love the somewhat comic style and the composition is so cool, with the shark breaking out of a wood frame on Amity beach. It also has a vintage look and feel thanks to the color palette. Some nice included details such as the reward poster, yellow barrels and the air tank that is a key element of the film. Such a fine piece.

Gundam by Rory Kurtz. What a gorgeous poster from Kurtz. Kurtz always delivers the goods when it comes to alternative movie posters, his clean lines and excellent compositions always stand out and make for fantastic prints. These prints for Gundam came out especially well. Love the composition on these and the Spoke Art Society edition here is simply stunning. The metallic inks really pop and if you look close at some of the pictures you’ll notice it. Overall just an amazing poster.

Jaw-dropping artwork for the Disney film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea from Kwow. This was a private commission that also had a screen print done as well in a larger run. While we generally prefer screen prints, this “1954 Vintage Variant” absolutely knocked our socks off. Giclée’s will often have more color depth than a screen print, but it’s the typography that we were so impressed with. The title, credits, even the Cinemascope and Technicolor additions are just outstanding and take this print to another level. The main title is a throwback to the original poster artwork as were some of the other details. Props to Jeff Barge and Andrew Rowland who did a phenomenal job on the typography. The paper choice is perfect and the print job by White Duck is spot on. Overall a beautiful print from one of our favorite films from our childhood. This one will be on the wall for a while.
